The bit we remember fondest is the roleplaying. You went from pinching sports cars to stealing combine harvesters. The ambitious plot wasn’t afraid to change pace, and at one point plucked you from the streets of Los Santos and dumped you in the hilly countryside between the three cities. Protagonist and gangster Carl "CJ" Johnson managed to keep the story on track despite the absurdity of everything you could do, from robbing a casino to stealing a jetpack from a top-secret government bunker and blasting away from the scene. San Andreas built on the brilliance of Vice City in every way: it was more than three times the size, and each of its cities - Rockstar’s versions of LA, San Francisco and Vegas - felt unique. Both these games are old and the licensing on several of the songs has expired (which is why I now play the pirated versions) but San Andreas's soundtrack is so much better than GTA IV's.A timeless masterpiece. IV has pool, bowling, air hockey, badass races, and a lot more side missions. Things to do? In San Andreas you can play pool, gamble customize and race cars. GTA IV gives you the option to restart the mission immediately but you still lose the money. In GTA IV you lose 10k and in San Andreas you lose all your guns and ammo and $200. There are no checkpoints, if you die in a mission it's the same as dying in free roam. Keep in mind though: these games are incredibly hard compared to GTA V and both RDRs. San Andreas is around 90 missions but they're much less repetitive and there were many more memorable missions in it than there were in IV. Has somewhere around 150 missions, twice as long as GTA V and slightly longer than RDR II. Missions - the GTA IV complete edition is an insanely long game.

Shootouts are still the funnest in maybe any game ever. Best physics in a Rockstar game other than RDR II. GTA IV is entirely city San Andreas gives you three cities, a massive forest, and a desert bigger than GTA V's. I think you'll find more immersion in GTA IV but San Andreas is several times the size and has a fuckload more variety. GTA IV's is detailed to the same level as V but San Andreas definitely feels like a PS2 game. Also, both CJ and Niko are amazing protagonists but I'd say Niko's more developed.

Where it shines is by having of the best casts of characters in any game - as well as GTA IV. The plot's all over the place - intentionally. On the other hand though, San Andreas doesn't exactly try to have a good story. GTA IV has easily the better story it's probably the best of any Rockstar game besides Red Dead Redemption. They're both phenomenal games so it's a tough call.
